Ariana Sherlock
Newcastle City Councilmember
Community | Collaboration | Commitment
I value collaboration and encourage new voices to enrich conversations and solve problems. Being a good councilmember means listening to understand, not just to respond, because when you fully understand all sides of an issue, finding solutions becomes attainable.
About Councilmember Sherlock
I moved to Newcastle in 2013 with my husband and two young children. I gravitated toward leadership opportunities in my community when my children were young. I served on the preschool volunteer board, served as the PTSA President for Hazelwood Elementary, and then President of the Hazelwood Community Association. These roles showed me the importance of being a community leader while teaching my children civic duty.
I ran for city council to represent neighbors who, like me, have chosen to raise our families in Newcastle, leveraging the skills I honed through volunteering.
City Council Experience
In my first term, I have been a member of the Finance Committee, Economic & Community Development Committee, and the King County Children and Youth Advisory Board. After serving two years on the council, my fellow council members elected me Deputy Mayor. Now, after one successful term, I understand how the City Council shapes our community by creating policies that assure equity, integrity, and respect for all residents.
As a member of the Finance Committee, I have been a leader during budget negotiations and have successfully passed budgets that prioritize a diverse, safe, and economically viable residential and business community.
I am very proud of my relationships with our neighboring cities and State Legislators. These relationships benefit our community by providing awareness of opportunities from the region, such as grants for improving Newcastle’s parks, trails, and infrastructure.
Supporting Community
I believe Newcastle is a hidden jewel and will always work to protect it. There are several ways to achieve this goal and it starts with supporting the people and businesses who are already doing great work in our community.
I support our volunteer commissions - Planning Commission & Community Activities Commission - by volunteering to attend regional committee meetings and helping out at city events, including Concerts in the Park and Newcastle Days.
I support our local business by advocating for pandemic relief through grants and technical support, and I continue to find ways that promote Newcastle businesses by serving on the Economic & Community Development Committee.
I pledge to remain an active listener to the residents of Newcastle and to continue the legacy of a safe, beautiful, and friendly community.
